FreakAngels: Interlude 04 - Page 3

Once having completed the flatting and the texturing, the shading is done. I hide all other layers, so I’m only working in two colours: white and the colour of the shadows. I try to think carefully about where the light is emanating from, and lay the shadows down accordingly. However, I’m not too exacting about this, as an image that is shaded to look good will be better than an image where the light-source has been slavishly observed. I often very roughly block out where the light and shadow go over the entire image before refining each section of the image. With some images like this one with large areas of shadow, I go in and put down subtle gradients and a second level of shadow into the image.
